Geography

The Geography Department at Allerton Grange School is an exciting place to be. The team spirit, dedication and enthusiasm are apparent when meeting with the team. Katy Williams is the Geography curriculum leader and is supported by Stuart Blackburn, Tom Hanson, Richard Taylor and Lucy Bloomfield.

Our vision

We aim to provide a rich, relevant and stimulating curriculum which offers all students an informative and interactive discovery of Geography through providing differentiated resources and creative, yet challenging, learning experiences.

Geography colleagues aim to support students by...

  • Building on student’s own experiences to stimulate an interest and a sense of wonder of places in a caring, safe and inclusive learning environment.
  • Encourage questioning and critical thinking about a range of issues, from a personal to a global scale, and which affect people now and in the future.
  • Develop global citizens who recognise the responsibility they have to other people as well as to the sustainability of our planet.

Course overview

All students study Geography in 2 hours per week. They are taught a mixture of physical and human Geography topics which cover a wide range of skills. The course overview is available at the bottom of this page, along with our schemes of learning. In Year 7, students study the following topics:

  • Natural World
  • What is Geography and the skills I will develop?
  • What are the key features of a geographical enquiry?
  • Human World
  • Where is everyone?
  • How is the population of Leeds expected to change over time?
  • Resourceful world
  • Can we go Green?
  • What is life like in hot and cold environments?

Assessments take the form of extended pieces of writing mid-way through each topic and an end of topic test.
