The literacy cornerstone provides a foundation for all aspects of reading at AGS, this is supported and enhanced by Words Matter, our structured policy of explicit vocabulary instruction. A range of measures is used to monitor and evaluate the impact of our reading program.

All students in Year 7/8 complete the Accelerated Reader programme, allowing us to measure and monitor reading ages.

Reading interventions:

• Ruth Miskin (lowest ability)

• Boosting Reading at Secondary (1-2 years behind chronological age),

• Lexonik Leap (low ability)

• Lexonik – (Years 9-11)

All students in KS3 complete termly vocabulary assessments of the Group 1 and 2 Academic Word lists, these are the words which appear with greatest frequency in academic texts.
