Year 12

Whether students are moving up internally from Year 11, or are completely new to Allerton Grange School, our dedicated Sixth Form team are on hand to help with adapting to life as a Sixth former. Year 12 students have certain privileges that students lower down the school do not, such as specific study and common areas, as well as being able to wear their own clothes.

There are a range of enrichment opportunities to get involved with which are designed to provide students with valuable experience, helping to add value to future higher education or job applications.

Students in Sixth Form are most likely to begin studying for A Level’s - details can be found on the Curriculum pages. Students will need to adapt themselves to increased independent study time and can take advantage of our quiet study rooms including a suite of up to date computers.

All Year 12 students will be assigned a Form Tutor and are expected to attend registration every day, unless an assembly is scheduled, between 8.50am and 9.10am. Form Tutors will pass on important messages as well as provide support to each student to ensure they are making progress. Assemblies will take place once a week in Main Hall 02, the day of the week will be confirmed at the beginning of the academic year.

The Tutorial Programme - helping students grow

We aim to encourage Sixth Formers to increase their independence by providing the right tools students need to reach their full potential.

In Year 12, areas covered in tutorials include:

  • how to manage your time and independent study effectively
  • drugs issues
  • sexual health
  • families and relationships
  • careers programme

The Progression Module will also be delivered, allowing students on a 2 year course to research and plan their next steps after Year 13. UCAS points are awarded for successful completion of this course. The course is designed and run in conjunction with Leeds Beckett, Bradford and Huddersfield Universities. Introduction to the topics are done during the weekly tutorial hour and most of the work completed in the students own time.

There are regular visiting speakers to our sixth form, who frequently give food for thought. Recent speakers have been a Holocaust survivor, community members and information about gap year opportunities. Our links with local and national employers and universities bring breadth to your experience; we regularly have visitors to school, ranging from admissions tutors from universities to local newspaper editors.
