History

Year 9 – The Modern World

The History curriculum at Allerton Grange is designed to give students a rich and broad understanding of the development of Britain and the wider world from the fall of the Roman Empire to the present day. Students will place these developments in a truly global perspective, and engage with the work of historians to help build not only their knowledge of the past, but their sense of History as a discipline which is contentious, complex and changing.

In Year 9 students will study the impact of industrial warfare on warfare and society, beginning with a study of World War One. Students will then look at the Russian Revolution and the creation of a Communist State, considering the impact on the lives of ordinary people in Stalinist Russia. Students will then consider developments across Europe with the rise of fascism and the impact of economic crisis. The Second World War on the Eastern Front will contextualise a study of the development of the Holocaust. Student will finish by looking at the post-war world and Britain’s place within it, including decolonisation, the Cold War, migration to Britain, the role of the USA and the rise of China.

At the end of Y9, students will consider the question ‘How do we tell the story of the 20th century?’. They will draw together their understanding from across the course and consider different ways of telling this complex story.
