History enables students to delve into the past and to acquire the necessary background knowledge in order to understand their present environment and the current affairs happening around them.
The department supports a broader engagement with history through extra-curricular opportunities. These have included visits to sites such as Eden Camp, project work with Leeds University, visits and talks from outside experts on particular themes.
The National Curriculum is used to provide a wide ranging and engaging series of relevant learning opportunities. We study historical periods of both Great Britain and the wider world. Where relevant, we also use local examples to highlight the connection that we all have with the past. Additionally, we seek to draw upon our diverse school community to highlight the contributions that all sections of British society have made to the world we now live in.
Looking to the future, we as a staff are acutely aware of the need to equip pupils with not just exam skills, but also transferable life skills such as independent research, analysis and thinking, reasoned debate and well-argued judgements.

Each term progress will be assessed via teacher ongoing assessment plus formal testing at the end of each topic. Skills and knowledge will be assessed.
