AQA GCSE Fine Art/Photography

Students are taught for 3 hours per week in both Year 10 and Year 11. During that time students work towards completing a GCSE in their chosen endorsement.

The GCSE is made up of 2 Components: Component 1 - Portfolio (coursework) 60% of the qualification and Component 2 – Controlled Assessment 40% of the qualification. The final examination is a 10 hour practical piece, usually completed over 2 days.

We also try to give the students the opportunity to work with an artist in resident and/or participate in workshops at local universities and colleges to expand their skills and knowledge.

AQA Fine Art

Hockney Joiner

Students fine tune a range of 2D drawing, painting and printing skills producing a large scale outcome, inspired by the photographic ‘joiners’ created by David Hockney. Students are asked to take the photographs needed for the joiner, during their Year 10 summer holiday.

Pre-public exam project

Students are given an inspirational title from which they develop their own project, adhering carefully to the GCSE assessment criteria. This project culminates in a 5 hour practical examination completed in the art rooms.

Externally Set Assignment (Final Exam Project)

Students work from a starting point chosen from the externally set examination paper. As above they produce a body of work which carefully adheres to the assessment criteria, demonstrating drawing, analytical research, compositional design and media experimentation. The final examination is a 10 hour practical piece, usually completed over 2 days in the art rooms.

AQA Photography

Surrealism Project

Developing independence and creativity using digital investigations, students work from the starting point of Surrealism. They explore the work of Magritte and Uelsmann before exploring their own choice of artists. As with their Year 10 project work, they will produce a wide range of outcomes within the context of this project.
