Year 10s Experience Sixth Form

With the end of the academic year approaching, Year 10 will be moving into their final GCSE year in September, at the end of which, they will need to make important decisions about their future. On Monday 25 June, the whole year group took part in the Sixth Form Taster Day to get a feel of what life is like studying at Allerton Grange beyond GCSEs. Some students attended workshops from external agencies to find out more about apprenticeships and courses on offer from local colleges.

Students signed up for 6 mini taster lessons, where they were able to sample what is taught in different subjects as part of the A Level curriculum. As members of the Sixth Form for the day, Year 10 came in non-uniform and were able to access sixth form facilities, such as the common room and study areas. They attended talks from the Head of Sixth Form, Ms Braim, and Key Stage 5 Director, Mr Donlon, who covered key aspects of becoming part of our Sixth Form community and how to apply through UCAS. Groups also got the chance to interact with Year 12 students currently studying A Levels, to find out more about the courses they were interested in.

At Allerton Grange, we are proud of our excellent Sixth Form provision, where 99% of students go on to a university, apprenticeship or employment of their choice. As a smaller Sixth Form, we have the time to give high quality individual careers guidance and pastoral care to ensure that all students move on to future success in their area of interest; 33% of our students continue their study at Russell Group universities.

Feedback from the day was extremely positive, with many students commenting on how useful it was to speak to existing students as well as being able to sample what they will actually be learning on different courses. There will be further opportunities arranged throughout the coming year for this cohort to access information and enrichment opportunities that link in with studying in our Sixth Form and moving onto universities or other pathways.
