The Vultures Song Performance

Selected Allerton Grange students joined Year 5 and 6 pupils from Moor Allerton Hall Primary School for a dramatic performance from the Blah Blah Blah Theatre Company, on Friday 8 June.

The show, entitled The Vultures Song, tells the story of a wealthy family who find themselves destitute and their lives turned upside down after their country is gripped by civil war. Narrated by a group of vultures, the macabre scenes depict neighbours turning on each other after an ‘us and them’ culture takes hold. The production company used innovative staging to represent the mass exodus of people, who have to walk hundreds of miles to find safety. Much to the delighted caws and squawks from the vultures, the ill and infirm are left at the roadside; easy pickings for scavengers, hungry for a feast. The family at the centre of the tale face many hardships on their journey, losing parents and siblings until only the little girl is left all alone when she finally arrives at a refugee camp.

Although the story dealt with difficult topics, such as death, kidnap and war, it delivered a powerful warning about what can happen when people let hate and intolerance into their lives.

The story ended with a flash forward to years after the war. The little girl, now a woman living with her own family in England, is reunited with her sister, who remained in their home country after they were torn apart. The pair have to adjust and learn to accept each other’s new families, who have lived separate lives through opposing circumstances.

Mr Roper, Headteacher at Allerton Grange, said “Many thanks to Moor Allerton Hall who booked the theatre company to deliver a performance as part of their tour around Leeds. It’s been a pleasure hosting the event; all the students in attendance learned a lot from the show.”
