Poetry Slam Final

On Friday 10 May, 13 students from Years 8 and 9 at Allerton Grange were lucky enough to make it to the final of the 'Words in the City' Poetry Slam, an annual event organised by the Ilkley Literature Festival.

Five schools took part and there were 13 teams altogether.

The day started with Poetry Workshops and warm up activities. The students worked in mixed school groups to produce group poems which were then performed to everyone.

After lunch, students were given time to perfect and practice their own poetry performances with some expert input from the two poets present, Sai Murray and Andy Craven Griffith.

Allerton Grange had three groups:

• The first team's poem was called 'Difference', performed by Eddie, Sara, Isaac and Samiyah.

• ‘We Are’ was performed by Constance, Jaz, Ethan, Abdullah and Marco.

• Kidiest, Theo, Kamile and Muaz performed their poem 'The Hidden Truth'.

Mrs Sutton said: “Everyone performed brilliantly, and the students were exemplary throughout.”

'We Are' was lucky enough to achieve third prize which was an added bonus.

Congratulations to all who took part.
