Cambridge Classics Trip
On Wednesday 20 November, the GCSE and A-level Classical Civilisation students as well as members of the Latin Club attended a Classics taster day at the University of Cambridge. Students began the day with a tour of Selwyn College led by Cambridge undergraduate students. Allerton Grange students were able to ask questions about student life, studying at Cambridge, the application process and Cambridge bursaries.
Students then experienced a lecture led by Classics academic Dr Hannah Wiley on Greek religion and cures sent by the gods. The day finished with a session in the Museum of Classical Archaeology looking at the art and sculpture of the Greek and Roman worlds. The museum houses one of the largest and last surviving plaster cast collections in the world. This gave students the opportunity to see some of the most famous sculptures from antiquity, many of which they have studied in lessons.
Students said that the trip was incredibly interesting as they gained a lot of knowledge about classical archaeology and got to experience a lecture at a university level. They particularly enjoyed their time in the museum as it gave them a great opportunity to see the sculpture they had studied up close. Overall, it was an exciting experience where students could gain a unique insight into studying Classics and what life is like studying at the University of Cambridge.
